Gypsies love ghost stories - here are a few told by our members:-
Two Gold Daggers - From Phoebe
They had been travelling round the hop gardens of Kent for miles looking for somewhere to pull in. Eventually they came to a nice spot where they decided to atch for the night. Atter lighting some fires and having something to eat, they all sat around talking. Suddenly they heard a noise at the bottom of the field, so the boys went down to see what it was. When they got there,
they saw a tiny man standing on the wall pointing to the earth below, they were so frightened they all ran back and jumped up into the wagons for the night. Next morning they went down to the wall and decided to start digging - imagine their surprise when they dug up TWO GOLD DAGGERS!
Wandering Boots - From Sonny
Me and my brother were living in a trailer in a lay-by on the Worcester Road. We only had candlelight in the trailer, so one dark evening after eating our meal, we went to bed. Suddenly we were woken by something going bump, bump, bump - and when we lit the candle we saw that our shoes had moved right across the floor. We had bought the shoes from a charity shop, so we quickly opened the door and chucked them out!
The Haunted Trailer - From Birdi
Some years ago when our daughter was a small baby, we bought a lovely trailer from a Gypsy dealer. The first night we moved in the baby kept us awake all night crying, and this went on night after night. We took the baby to the Doctor but he could find nothing wrong with her, but still she cried every night. After six months we were both run-down and ill from lack of sleep, and still the child cried. One night my husband lay down on the bed exhausted but soon he saw strange flashing lights reflecting on the roof. There was no lighting outside the trailer and none on inside and it made the hair on his neck stand up, and although we had central heating and a heater in the trailer, it was always cold. Shortly after, when a relative asked to buy the trailer we swapped. From the very first night in the new trailer, the baby slept right through the night and we never had another bad night with her again. The man who bought the trailer slept in it only two nights because he said he saw an old woman who kept leaning over the top of him when he lay in bed. So he swapped the trailer with his brother for a coloured horse - but the brother saw the same thing and sold it on!!
Ghosts in the night - From Lemmy
My father and his sister sometimes used to pull-in on the same place, and the two families would sit round the fires at night telling stories. One time they met up with some London Travellers and invited them to join them. It was a very dark night, so they also lit some candles, but it was still hard to see outside the circle of the fire. So my Aunt went into the field, cut some holes for her head and arms in a white sheet and put it on, then she came through the hop-field wailing and crying and frightened them all to death. Not for long though, because they soon realised what was happening and got up and chased her away!
Phoebe Grey Lane - From Beverley
My Gran told a story about a place called Phoebe Gray Lane that was haunted. As it was getting dark, when they came to a green they decided to stop. They tethered the horses and dogs , had something to eat, then got into bed up in the wagon expecting a good night'sleep. They didn't know at the time that it was known locally as a lover's lane, but it looked a good place as it was near the hop gardens they were due to work on. All of a sudden the wagon shook, the dogs barked, the horses were restless and kept moving and they all had a very disturbed night's sleep. In the morning they decided to pull out, only to find that in the dark they'd put the wagon on top of the grave of a young girl who'd been murdered by her lover in that very lane!
Half-man/Half-dog - From Phoebe
Some Travellers were roaming, trying to find somewhere to pull-in for the night. They came across a small cottage and sent the children to ask if they could pull-in by it and it they could have two buckets of water, some for themselves and some for the horses. When the children went round the back of the cottage, they saw a figure tied up that was half-man/half-dog and ran back to the wagon. They got a slap from their grandmother who didn't believe them and for not fetching the water, so she went to the back garden herself. What a shock she had when she saw the creature, but the poor woman who lived in the house begged her not to tell, because she feared that if people found out they would put him in a fair!
The Goblin - From Chris
Long ago, my two aunts were walking two miles to a village. Time came to walk back along the very dark, very lonely road. Half-way home, one of my aunt's cried "Dear Mother, what's that white thing sat on that field gate?", To my other aunt it looked like a goblin or a little man. "Well whatever it is", said the first aunt, "I'm not going past it!". So the two girls turned round and ran quickly home the long way round - the very long way round! Next day, one of them ventured back to the dreaded spot and there was a white horse with his head looking over the gate!!
"The Muller" - From Jean
What I am about to relate is the truth, and something that has haunted me to this day! It was when we living in the wagon at a place called Heavenly Bottom. My brother and I had the chicken pox, I was about four years old and we were on the top bed and, as you know, just above the bed is the small square window. Well - without warning or noise, this black velvet face appeared taking up the whole of the window! I remember us putting the sheet over our head and shouting "IT'S THE MULLER". I was nearest the window and will never forget the eyes - staring like an animal stalking it's prey! The face disappeared as quietly as it came, but I have never forgotten it and can see that face to this day. There were no horses or any other animals in the field and no animals could have reached such a high window so silently - so what was it? I wouldn't live at Heavenly Bottom rent free now - it's too unkery!!
